The start of a new school year is an exciting time of year for most children. Excitement and promise is often accompanied by new clothes, a new backpack and all of the essential school supplies; however, for many children having the back-to-school basics is simply not a reality.
Project Back to School began in 2011 after a MECA home visit with a young child. The family had limited means and would often use the heat from the oven to dry clothes. During the visit, the child, who had been waiting for his socks to dry, soon found that his socks had disintegrated after too many washings and dryings. The idea for Project Back to School was born soon after. According to data provided by the New Mexico Voices for Children, 43.9% of the children living in Dona Ana County live in areas of concentrated poverty.
Each year, MECA Therapies has partnered with local businesses, such as First Light Federal Credit Union and the Hispano Chamber of Commerce, to collect back-to-school items for children in need. Project Back to School accepts back-to-school donations for children ranging from three years of age up to 18 years of age. The initiative focuses on providing children with items such as backpacks and school supplies, but also accepts donations of socks, underwear, toothbrushes and toothpaste, as well as hair brushes and combs.
